The high ground protruding on the horizon is Mount Noge, and the small cape beyond it is Honmoku Point.

The Cultural Soul: Symbolism & Philosophy
Beyond its scenic beauty, this print vividly documents the lively everyday life of commoners along the Tokaido road. Located about seven ri (approx. 27 km) from Edo, Kanagawa Hill was an area with an excellent view, where many travelers took their first overnight stay.
In the foreground, female touts are depicted forcefully pulling the sleeves of passing travelers to lure them into their teahouses, while a traveling pilgrim known as a rokubu walks nearby.
These human interactions transform the landscape into a relatable narrative, reflecting the Edo-period people's deep fascination with and yearning for travel.
A Hidden Privilege: The Teahouse Balcony
A fascinating detail in this artwork is the balconies built on the ocean side of the teahouses.
While Kanagawa Hill was famous for its magnificent views, only the customers who actually entered the teahouses were granted the privilege to step out onto these balconies and enjoy the spectacular panoramic scenery.
Hiroshige's genius lies in his ability to capture such specific experiences of a traveler. Interestingly, in other editions of the Tokaido series (such as the Gyosho and Reisho editions), Hiroshige depicted the exact same post town from entirely different perspectives—looking back at the town from afar or viewing it from a higher mountain.
This highlights his exceptional skill as an art director, offering diverse visual experiences of a single famous location.
